The NHS Long Term Plan commits that every patient will have the right to be offered digital-first care from their GP Practice by 2023/24.

Patients will have the choice as to what, if any, digital services they use, and those who can’t or don’t wish to use digital services will still be able to access the GP Practice over the phone or in person.

Digital services include:

  • Video consultation - appointments that take place between a patient and a health care professional over video call instead of face-to-face or over the telephone.
  • Online consultation (e-consult and engage consult) - a form on your GP practice website that asks you questions regarding why you need an appointment with your GP practice, which is used by your GP practice to ensure you get the healthcare you need at the right time with the most appropriate person.
  • SMS - two-way text messaging through your mobile phone with your GP Practice.
  • NHS App - simple and secure way of accessing NHS services, such as booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions, getting health advice and accessing your COVID-19 vaccine passport.
  • NHS 111 - 111 online can help if you have a medical problem and you're not sure what to do.
